Great British Insulation Scheme: The Ultimate Guide

Does your home need insulating but all you’ve ever seen is funding for people on government benefits? Now’s your chance to get some funding to improve the energy efficiency of your home for free!

The Great British Insulation Scheme is a new government energy efficiency scheme (previously called ECO+). The Ofgem administered scheme is designed to insulate the least energy efficient homes in Great Britain, to tackle fuel poverty and help reduce energy bills.

Why was the scheme introduced?

The scheme aims to address the energy efficiency of buildings and reduce carbon emissions, thereby helping the UK achieve its Net Zero climate goals and lowering energy bills for households.

Who is eligible for a Great British Insulation Scheme Grant?

Homeowners, landlords, and private tenants may be eligible for the scheme. However, it does depend on certain criteria such as property type, location, and existing insulation.

The scheme will offer grants to:

How does the Great British Insulation Scheme differ from the ECO4 Scheme?

Whereas the ECO4 scheme offers grants for a wide range of home energy efficiency measures, the Great British Insulation Scheme focuses its grants purely on delivering lower-cost insulation measures. This will allow as many households as possible access to support much more quickly.

Which types of insulation does the scheme include?

As mentioned earlier, the scheme focuses on low-cost insulation measures.

These include:

  • Loft Insulation
  • Pitched roof Insulation
  • Flat roof Insulation
  • Under floor Insulation
  • Solid floor Insulation
  • External and Internal Solid Wall Insulation.
  • Roof-in-Roof Insulation

Eclipse Energy can offer any of the above insulation measures and if your grant application is successful you could have your insulation measure installed for FREE. Find out more about Eclipse Energy insulation services here.

How much can I save on my energy bills with improved insulation?

Energy savings can vary based on factors like property size, location and the measures you have implemented in your home. However, proper insulation measures can reduce your energy bills by hundreds of pounds per year. As an example, your roof loses 25% of heat. So insulating your loft or roof can reduce your bills by this amount, which over a lifetime can be a substantial amount.

The UK Government states that you can expect to save £310 per year on your energy bills.

How do I apply?

The first step is to check your eligibility by giving us a call on 01422 414850. It’s the quickest way to check your eligibility. However, you can also fill out a form on our website if you prefer.

Is there a deadline to apply for the scheme?

The scheme is currently scheduled to run until March 2026, but funding could deplete before that time. Depending on the number of households applying for the scheme, it is advisable to apply as soon as possible.

What is the expected lifespan of insulation installed under this scheme?

Insulation installed under the scheme is expected to last for several decades, often around 25 years or more.

Will installing insulation affect my property’s value?

Improving energy efficiency through insulation can increase the value of your property, as it makes it more appealing to potential buyers or tenants. This is due to reduced energy consumption (therefore reduced energy costs) and an improved Energy Performance Certificate rating.

Is the scheme available nationwide?

Yes, the scheme is available in England, Scotland and Wales, although the eligibility criteria varies slightly in each area.

Is the scheme only for residential properties?

Yes, the scheme is specifically targeted to residential properties.

Can rented properties benefit from the scheme?

From Autumn 2023, the Great British Insulation Scheme will be available to private rental properties with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E or lower.

Landlords whose properties are eligible for the scheme could benefit from grants of up to £1,500, which are being funded by energy suppliers.

Can I get insulation for historic or listed buildings?

Yes, you will be eligible to apply for the scheme and the measures that can be implemented on your home will depend on the restrictions applied to your property by its listing status.

Are there any environmental benefits to the scheme?

Yes, not only will all the measures have a positive impact on energy bills, as it will reduce the amount of energy your household uses. It will also reduce your carbon footprint and help to fight climate change.

What happens if I move house after receiving insulation through the scheme?

If you move house, the insulation measure will remain with the property, benefiting the new occupants. You may be able to re-apply if your new home is eligible.

Can I install insulation myself, or does it have to be done by a professional under the scheme?

Under the scheme all works will need to be completed by a professional accredited  installer, such as Eclipse Energy.

How long does the insulation installation process typically take?

The installation duration will vary depending on the measures you are having done however most insulation measures are quick to install and can usually be complete within a couple of days.

What happens if I’m not eligible for the scheme?

If you are not eligible, there may be other schemes available you might be eligible for. You should also consider self-funding insulation for your home if you are not eligible as most insulation measures are relatively low cost and can see big savings in annual energy costs.
