Room in Roof Insulation

What is Room in Roof Insulation?

Room in Room insulation involves using insulated boards in the room in roof (or attic room) space. This helps to increase the thermal efficiency of the tallest room in the property. It works by trapping heat in the room, keeping it warm. It also helps in summer to prevent heat from entering, keeping it cool on hot days. With up to 25% of heat lost through roofs, room in roof insulation is one of the most effective ways of reducing energy bills and emissions in homes across the UK.

What is a Room in Roof?

A room in roof/attic room, is a specific term related to a permanent room in the roof space of a property. These rooms must have a fixed, permanent staircase (not a loft ladder), a window and a light source.

These types of rooms are often found in bungalows but are also very popular in terrace houses. They typically have either dormers or Velux windows to maximise light in the space.

Mrs and Mrs McHale, Baden Street, Keighley, have benefitted from Better Homes Yorkshire’s attic room insulation scheme, installed by Eclipse Energy.

How is it Insulated?

Typically, a room in roof is insulated using boards made of polystyrene or polyurethane, due to their ability to keep heat within a property. These insulated boards are simply added on top of the existing wall, plastered, and painted, leaving a high-quality finish that is indistinguishable from when the work began, apart from how much warmer the space is!

As PAS2030 accredited installers, we also carry out a full ventilation and condensation assessment on our room in roof properties, to ensure that the house is breathable and does not run the risk of condensation or mould build up. If needed, we can install window ventilation and mechanical ventilation (extractor fans) in the areas most prone to damp and condensation, such as the bathroom and kitchen

How Much Can I Save?

The amount you can save depends on how much energy you currently use, and the size of the space that is being insulated. On average, our room in roof installations save our customers up to £400 per year. With the lifespan of the system being at least 25 years, that’s a huge £10,000 saving!

Is There Funding Available?

There is funding available for Room in Roof insulation in Calderdale and Bradford. In addition, particularly energy inefficient homes (with an EPC of F or G) could access funding via ECO4. This to receive full or partially funded insulation. Contact us today to find out more.
