Great British Insulation Scheme: The Ultimate Guide

Does your home need insulating but all you’ve ever seen is funding for people on government benefits? Now’s your chance to get some funding to improve the energy efficiency of your home for free!

The Great British Insulation Scheme is a new government energy efficiency scheme (previously called ECO+). The Ofgem administered scheme is designed to insulate the least energy efficient homes in Great Britain, to tackle fuel poverty and help reduce energy bills.

Why was the scheme introduced?

The scheme aims to address the energy efficiency of buildings and reduce carbon emissions, thereby helping the UK achieve its Net Zero climate goals and lowering energy bills for households.

Who is eligible for a Great British Insulation Scheme Grant?

Homeowners, landlords, and private tenants may be eligible for the scheme. However, it does depend on certain criteria such as property type, location, and existing insulation.

The scheme will offer grants to:

How does the Great British Insulation Scheme differ from the ECO4 Scheme?

The ECO4 scheme focuses on giving free grants to low income households and those on government benefits. Whereas the Great British Insulation Scheme is aimed at everyone regardless of income status. This will allow as many households as possible access to support much more quickly.

Which types of insulation does the scheme include?

The scheme offers one insulation measure either fully or partially funded.

These include:

  • Loft Insulation
  • Pitched Roof Insulation
  • Cavity Wall Insulation
  • Underfloor Insulation
  • Internal Wall Insulation.
  • Room-in-Roof Insulation

Eclipse Energy can offer any of the above insulation measures and if your grant application is successful you could have your insulation measure installed for FREE, or partially funded. Find out more about Eclipse Energy insulation services here.

How much can I save on my energy bills with improved insulation?

Energy savings can vary based on factors like property size, location and the measures you have implemented in your home. However, proper insulation measures can reduce your energy bills by hundreds of pounds per year. As an example, your roof loses 25% of heat. So insulating your loft or roof can reduce your bills by this amount, which over a lifetime can be a substantial amount.

The UK Government states that you can expect to save £310 per year on your energy bills.

What is the expected lifespan of insulation installed under this scheme?

Will installing insulation affect my property’s value?

Improving energy efficiency through insulation can increase the value of your property, as it makes it more appealing to potential buyers or tenants. This is due to reduced energy consumption (therefore reduced energy costs) and an improved Energy Performance Certificate rating.
