As the weather gets colder, you may be thinking it’s almost time to switch on boiler for your central heating.
However, the recent energy cap increase and still high costs of energy might be making you hesitate and trying to hold on as long as possible. All of this makes it difficult to know when is the best time to turn the heating back on.
Online heating specialists BestHeating have analysed Met Office data to estimate when the best time would be to switch on your heating. Their data shows that 20th October (this Friday) is the date to turn the heating on as following the 20th, temperatures aren’t expected to rise above 15°C for the remainder for 2023.
The NHS recommendation is that heating should be on once outside temperatures drop below 15°C and that inside temperatures should be kept as a minimum of 18°C. Lower temperatures over long periods inside the home can cause health issues, especially for those living with health conditions.
Keep your energy bills low during winter
Keeping your energy bills down during winter can be very difficult but here are a few suggestions that can help to keep your home warm and your energy bills as low as possible in winter.
1. Only heat the rooms you are in
Turn down radiators in rooms you aren’t using regularly, this can reduce your energy usage significantly.
2. Turn down the heat
Turning down the temperature on your thermostat by just 1 degree could save you up to £80 per year.
3. Reduce or remove draughts
Cold getting in through draughts under doors, seal cracks in floors and skirting boards, letterboxes and unused chimneys dramatically cool your home and make your heating work harder to heat your rooms which will cost more in energy.
4. Close your curtains before
Closing your curtains before it gets dark will help to retain heat in your home built up during the day.
5. Insulate, Insulate, Insulate
By far one of the best ways to reduce your energy bills is to ensure your home is properly insulated, for example up to 25% of heat is lost through your roof if you don’t have loft insulation.
