Air Source Heat Pumps
Air source heat pumps are an alternative, energy efficient way to generate heating for your home. Installing a heat pump in your property allows you to generate your own renewable heat, reducing your carbon footprint and protecting you against rising gas bills.
At Eclipse Energy, our team of MCS accredited installers can work with you to create the perfect off-gas heating solution for your home. As experts in retrofitting existing properties, we can advise on the most suitable system for you, the requirements for your property and how to get the best out of your new heating system.
Benefits
- Reduce your carbon footprint with electrical heating
- Avoid the rising cost of gas
- Pair with solar for 100% renewable heating
- Government funding available
How Does It Work?
In simple terms, an air source heat pump works like a refrigerator in reverse. All air, no matter how cold, contains some level of heat energy. A heat pump extracts this energy from the air to heat your home through your existing system (such as radiators or underfloor heating). This process is managed in three steps.
- A heat pump is installed outside of your property in a discrete location. This heat pump extracts energy from the air, and is effective in temperatures as low as -25C
- The energy from the heat pump provides for all your heating and hot water needs, utilising a hot water cylinder
- The entire system is operated via your phone or a wireless controller, allowing you to set the temperature of your home at whatever you prefer
Why Choose an Air Source Heat Pump?
Air source heat pumps are incredibly efficient, particularly when compared to gas boilers. A gas boiler will generate approximately 1 kWh of heat per 1kWh of fuel. An air source heat pump, my comparison, generates approximately 3.5 kWh of heat per 1kWh of electricity. With the rising cost of gas, and the governments plans to reduce the cost of electricity over the coming years, this can result in a significant saving for you on your bills, if paired with the right utility provider.
In addition, air source heat pumps are seen as one of the most effective ways to reduce our household emissions as a country. With up to 14% of our total emissions coming from heating homes, transitioning to a heat pump is one of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint, while benefiting from government funding and incentives to do so.
Is A Heat Pump Right for Me?
At Eclipse Energy, we believe is taking a ‘whole house’ approach with our customers and will advise you on every step of the process, should you wish to install a heat pump in your home. Air source heat pumps work best in well insulated homes, ensuring the heat you generate stays in your property.
Our surveyors can produce accurate heat loss calculations based on your current insulation levels, as well as look at your utility bills to see what impact switching to a heat pump would have on your monthly expenditure. We believe in finding a solution that is right for you, using our expertise in the retrofit industry to build a perfect package. We can advise on suitable insulation measures (if required) and energy providers that will give you the greatest benefit.
In addition, a heat pump typically generates heat at a lower level than a gas boiler, and as such it should not be used like a boiler is. It is best to run them for longer periods to get the most comfort and efficiency out of them, and our surveyors can advise on the best way to use your heat pump.
In addition, we can provide advice on other measures that can reduce your energy consumption and save you money. Air source heat pumps work perfectly together with solar panels and a battery, allowing you to power your heating almost completely off-grid.
Funding
There is presently government funding available for heat pumps on a scheme running until 2025. At present, customers can receive £5,000 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. You could be eligible for this grant if the following applies:
- You own the property (this includes businesses, second homes and property you rent out)
- The heat pump will fully replace a fossil fuel heating system (such as oil, gas or electric)
- The property has a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
- The property is well insulated and has no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation
- The property is not a new build or social housing, although self builds are eligible
