Council Initiative Save Homeowners Millions on Energy Bills

Saving Money on Energy Bills in Calderdale

Calderdale Council home improvement initiatives over the past several years have saved homeowners millions on their energy bills. This has dramatically reduced carbon emissions, the local authority has announced.

By the end of 2021, The Council will have completed over 350 room in roof renovations. This was in partnership with Better Homes Yorkshire and BEIS. The schemes, which initially began with 160 properties in 2019, have a lifetime CO2 saving of almost 17,000 tonnes. The savings equate to taking over 3500 cars off the road for one year. Giving a huge reduction of over £3 million in local residents’ energy bills.

Through the scheme, homeowners meeting certain income-based criteria in Calderdale receive a fully funded renovation of their attic room. However, this is provided that it is already used as a permanent room. The renovation includes insulation, decorating and ventilation upgrades. Ultimately, making the home more energy efficient while reducing the risk of damp and mould.

Stephen Batty, Head of Sustainability at Better Homes Yorkshire, said: “There is a huge focus in the world around climate change at the moment. People will have seen things in the news around COP26 recently and how world leaders are coming together to discuss how to tackle what is a global issue. This scheme in Calderdale helps address climate change and carbon emissions locally. It demonstrates what can be done at a local level to help reduce carbon emissions from homes. First and foremost, whilst saving money of their fuel bills.

“With energy bills on the rise, and a further increase expected to the energy bill price cap expected again in March next year. This offer is a great opportunity for people in Calderdale to make their homes warmer and cheaper to heat. I’d urge anyone who is eligible to take advantage and protect themselves against rising energy prices.”

Installation of the measures has been led by local energy saving experts Eclipse Energy. Commenting on the milestone achievement, Managing Director Mark Bannister added “Calderdale Council have been hugely proactive in pioneering energy saving measures for homeowners in the region. We work with numerous local authorities across Yorkshire. We can confidently say that Calderdale are spearheading the initiative to cut carbon emissions and bills for their residents.”

“Not only is their work helping people have warmer, more comfortable homes. But by using local installers they are also directly investing in the local economy, creating jobs in the area”.

Homeowners interested in taking advantage of the scheme are encouraged to contact the Council or Eclipse Energy directly, as there is a limited amount of funding remaining. “There is only funding left for approximately 100 properties” Mark added. “We want to make sure that everyone who can takes advantage of this while it’s still available and urge anyone interested to get in touch as soon as possible”.
